The 8th Shamarpa Palchhen Chhokyi Dondup was born as a son of Ngagchhang Chhenpo Karma Guru Rinpoche in 1695. Karma Guru Rinpoche was the oldest son of Venerable Karma Chhosang, the head of Gochhang Ling Monastery. Shamarpa’s father Karma Guru Rinpoche was the second throne holding lama of the then Gochhang Ling Monastery and his mother Jimpa Sangmo was a daughter of the Venerable Ringa Dorje Yolmopa, the founder of Palchok Monastery and descendant of the first Nirmanakaya Ngagchang Shakya Zangpo Yolmopa in Yolmo region.
