
N epal is the birthplace of Lord Buddha. This is the very holy place from where the world peace was promulgated. This is also the meditation land of many great Siddhas. Many Himalayan regions of Nepal is believed to be blessed by the compassionate Avalokiteshwara and Yolmo is one of those blessed Hilly regions. Yolmo is situated in the northern part of Sindhupalchok, Nuwakot, Rasuwa and Dhading district of Nepal.
It is believed that Tathagata Buddha had predicted about the secret Yolmo place in Avatangshaka sutra. This fact is told to Lord Milarepa, the great yogi by Marpa Lochawa, the founder of Kargyud Tradition. This is mentioned in the spiritual song called Milagurbhum as following: “Since the glorious mountain of Mangyul and Yolmo Gangra of Nepal is predicted in Avatangshaka Sutra, one should visit and meditate in that place.”
The Yolmo region is of great importance in terms of its religious and cultural richness as well as its natural beauty. This is such a holy place that many great Tibetan spiritual teachers such as Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Himalayan Buddhism, the great poet and yogi Lord Milarepa, Gochhang Reychhen, Ngakchhang Shyakya Sangpo Yolmopa, Ngari Penchhen, Karma Chhosang, the 6th Shamarpa, great Siddhas and scholar Karma Lobsang, Rikzin Chhewang Norbu, Surya Singey, Thinley Dudjom, Dakkar Chhokyi Wangchhug, Churgyen Norbu, the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa, Dudjom Rinpoche, Jyadral Rinpoche, Dukpa Rinpoche and Urgyen Tulku Rinpoche had attained the supreme attainment by meditating there. This is also the birthplace of the second Pema Gyalpo, the third Tulku Karma Tenzin and Tulku Garwang Dondup, the Nirmanakaya (Emanation Body) of the 8th Shamarpa Rinpoche Palchhen Chhokyi Dondup, Yolmo Tulku Silnon Wangyal Dorje and the great scholar Karma Lobsang respectively. According to the Buddhist religious texts, seven secret regions are considered to be the most sacred sites from among other hundred secret regions mentioned in Buddhist texts. Yolmo Gangra is one of those sacred places which is situated in Yolmo region.
The famous and great scholar Gochhang Reychhen (1494-1559), the disciple of the great Siddha Jechun Changnyen Heruk (1452-1507) initially had established the Gochhaling Monastery at the sacred and historical place, Yolmo only after the formation of noble assembly consists of eight monks. Dharma Lord Karma Chhosang (1583-1638), the clan of Nedongpa / Dewa Nyedong (Sarma Lama), permanently settled in this monastery as a successor. He belonged to the Yarlung Dynasty, the descendant of the first Tibetan king Nyathri Chenpo. His main spiritual teachers were the 6th Shamarpa Chhokyi Wangpo (1584-1530) and venerable Shabdrung Dubchhog Wangpo (1563-1618).
